Vukovar

From 1938 to 1940, the Križ (Holy Cross) Hospital was built in Vukovar. It was the only hospital owned by the Province. During communist rule in 1948, the entire complex was nationalised: the hospital and the Sisters’ residence. The sisters who worked in the hospital were dismissed and had to leave their own convent. In the same year, the sisters took over the work in the Franciscan monastery, the management of the household and the sacristy and the organ playing duties.

From 1966 until the beginning of the Homeland War in 1991, the sisters worked in the hospital again, as they did after the liberation of the city of Vukovar in 1998. In the same year, the sisters took over the pastoral work in the Franciscan monastery in the parish of St. Philip and St. James: religious education in the school and parish, liturgical organ playing and sacristy service. The sisters also visit elderly and infirm people in the old people’s home.
