COMMITMENT TO PREVENTING HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Every year, about two and a half million persons fall victim to human trafficking. Of these, 80 percent are women. (Source: www.amnesty.ch)

The participants in the General Chapter of 2008, faced with this reality, were deeply shocked and looked for possibilities of what we, as a community, could do to prevent this; and how we could network with other organizations engaged in human, more especially in trafficking of women.

To broaden our knowledge of this theme, an international committee was set up. It was to look for ways for sensitization and concrete possibilities for action. Today, efforts against the trafficking of women is a point of emphasis in our community. In various countries, some of our sisters live in shelters together with affected women. Others work «on the streets»”, try to clarify the problems, and are active in prevention as well as counselling.

In each province and vicariate, there is at least one sister appointed for this work of counteracting trafficking of women. In various places, committees have been set up.

The sisters of our entire community keep November 25 as a day to remember and pray for women who have been affected.

At present, there is a «network of prayer». Elderly and sick sisters are invited to show their solidarity with these women in distress.

Such small networks of solidarity may eventually bring about a more just world. We will continue to do this.
