The Province was founded on June 16th, 1991; the inauguration of the North-East Province took place at Tripolia Hospital Community.

At that time, this province had 210 Sisters in 31 Communities serving in the Dioceses of Patna, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Dumka, Raiganj, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Delhi and Lucknow.

On September 10th, 1995, the Provincial Administration shifted their residence from Tripolia Convent to the newly built Provincial House (belonging to Kurji Parish) in Fairfield Colony, Patna.

Over the past years (1991-2017), the province grew in number of its members, of communities and fields of apostolate. Every year new members were added to our religious family.  We could open new mission stations, and our existing communities could take up new activities.

Vision-Mission Statement

Urged by the Lord’s compassionate love, challenged by the need of the time and as sharers in the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection, we, the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross in India, commit ourselves to proclaiming the good news and work towards creating a new society of wholesome individual persons, families and communities where

  • the basic needs of everyone are met
  • love, faith, justice, equity, self-reliance, sharing and co-operation are promoted
  • people, especially women, dalits, tribals and other underprivileged persons and groups are supported, enabled and empowered
  • children are cared for and do not have to work for a livelihood
  • communal harmony and respect for human life and dignity are fostered
  • nature is protected and preserved
  • Christians are strengthened in their faith.

We earnestly desire to bring about an attitudinal change in ourselves, personally and collectively to adopt a participatory and integrated approach at all levels of our involvement.  Living in a pluralistic society we want to further network and collaborate with like-minded persons, groups and governments.

In September 2017, we opened a house in Delhi with the purpose of providing shelter and protection for women that are threatened by the practice of trafficking in human beings. This is a common project, sustained by all four Indian provinces of  our congregation.
