Beginning of the General Chapter 2022

From August 02 to 24, 2022, the 55 Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross, from Africa, North and South America, Asia and Europe will gather in the Franziskushaus in Altötting, Germany – for the 23rd General Chapter. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the General Chapter had to be postponed by two years. This year, despite the Corona – summer wave, it is finally able to take place.

The moderator team consists of Mrs. Elisabeth Höfler from Vienna, Austria and Fr. Thomas Dienberg OFM Cap from Münster, Germany. They will accompany the events in the Chapter procedurally. The translators, minutes-takers and other collaborators will assist with their competences in the course of the Chapter and thus contribute to its success.

Under the motto, «Moved by God’s Spirit, going forward with courage», the chapter members will discuss the current issues and topics of the community and give new directions for the future.

On August 18, a new General Leadership consisting of the Superior General, the Assistant General, and five other councilors will be elected.

The General Chapter is by nature a spiritual event and is the highest legislative body of the Congregation. It is composed of the General Leadership, the General Treasurer, the Provincial and Vicariate Superiors, the elected delegates, and sisters who are called to attend. This significant event is held every six years.

The Chapter members represent the worldwide Congregation, which currently has more than 2500 sisters in 18 different countries.

The General Chapter provides a common platform for participants to dialogue with God, with themselves and with each other. Seeking together how to live the Charism of the Congregation with courage and hope in this uncertain time is a major concern.
