Three communities in the mountains of the Himalayan region

In all the three communities:  Kurseong 1500 meters, Mamring 1000 meters and Sonada 1800 meters above Sea level, Sr. Pratima and Sr. Dorothee were warmly welcomed and experienced great hospitality and care.

The local language is Nepali in Kurseong. Christians are a minority here. This area is known by the vast tea gardens. Most of the people work in tea gardens for their livelihood. They love singing, music and dance.
Our sisters are involved in the school and in the parish. There is also the possibility for small groups of sisters to make retreats or for rest and relaxation.

People live in a very simple manner in this “remote” area. Nevertheless, in the last few years the area around Mamring has developed a lot. Correspondingly, the needs of the people are great. The sisters are engaged in education, pastoral and health care.

Sonada is situated just in the middle of vast tea gardens. Most people earn their livelihood by working in tea gardens.
The convent was established in 1968. The main purpose of starting this community was to make medical care available, since there were no hospitals nearby. Later they built up a school.
Today the school has classes from Montessori to higher secondary almost 2000 students. The classes V-XII are exclusively for girls. The school is one of the best in the area. In the hostel  there are 84 students.
