Mala Loka, Slovenia

The first three sisters came from Graz to Slovenia in 1894. At the time, this region belonged to the province of Styria-Carinthia.

After the change in national borders in 1924, the convent in Mala Loka became part of the province of Croatia. During the Second World War, the convent building was completely plundered and burnt down. But after the war, the sisters returned and began to rebuild.

In the hope that more Slovenian girls would enter the convent in their own country and that the sisters could help the local church more, the Vicariate of Slovenia was founded on 1 May 1970, with 77 sisters. Since 2007, the Vicariate Slovenia has been part of the Province of Europa Mitte.

Today, six sisters still live in Slovenia: two are in the convent in Mala Loka and four in neighbouring nursing homes. Two Slovenian sisters live in the community at the Wels Clinical Centre.

The sisters are in intensive discussions about a good future use for the convent building, which is now almost empty.
