HOLY CROSS CONVENT, MOHANPUR, GIRIDIH, 30 November/01 December 2024

Giridih is a small district town and is an important transport junction for our sisters. In addition to the Santal ethnic group, other low-income people who have left their home villages in search of better work live in this area.

The house in Mohanpur was opened in 1979. Originally, the sisters were involved in local pastoral work and it was a transit house for the sisters travelling through to the various regions of India. Today, the sisters are involved in the parish by engaging in various ministries such as choir conducting, catechesis and helping to organise liturgical celebrations.

Two sisters look after the accounts for our various communities and institutions in the neighbourhood and beyond. Many sisters are grateful that they can pass on this precise work to the two sisters.

The house also serves as a transit house, and almost every day sisters travelling through the area come here for a short break. Hospitality and helpfulness are very important. Poor people regularly stop by and ask the sisters for help, which they are happy to provide.

The “Holy Cross Paradise” pre-primary school is also located in this house.  Around 80 children aged between 2 ½ and approx. 6 years attend the pre-primary school. When we arrived, we were greeted by the waiting children with a song, a personalised greeting and the traditional garlands.

For two months, the teachers rehearsed the programme with the children, which included traditional dances as well as reciting poems and dance songs. The parents did not miss out on the programme and proudly watched their children perform. Afterwards, the parents were able to join their children for a well-deserved weekend.
