Maheshmunda is located 20 kilometres from the city of Giridih in the state of Jharkhand. The inhabitants are made up of mixed groups of Santhals, Dalits and Muslims, many of whom suffer from tuberculosis and malaria.
The community was founded in 1953 with the aim of spreading the faith and providing education to the people of Maheshmunda. In 1954, the Health Centre was opened, where women who are unable to have children or have problems during pregnancy are cared for.
The people are poor and see no value in the education of girls. However, thanks to our sisters, who run the school up to upper secondary level, some women have moved up in life and have various government and private jobs.
The sisters’ campus has a Hindi Medium middle School with 1019 students between the ages of 5 and 13, a Hindi Medium High School with 595 students and a boarding school with 275 students. There is also a health centre, a small house for the teachers’ accommodation and a farm.
