Holy Cross Convent Chakwaso

Chakwaso is a thickly populated area.  We have one side the backward class, sweepers and workers of the municipality and the other side Muslims and Hindus.

This mission began in 1975 to support the underprivileged people of Gudari, predominantly sweepers from the Municipality. Initially, it focused on educating the children of these sweepers. Construction work for the school commenced on April 21, 1975.

Initially, sisters travelled from Prabhat Tara to teach in the school. Due to the distance, they initially resided in the Government Nurses Quarter with our sisters working at Sadar Hospital until 1995. After our sisters relocated from the Government Hospital, those teaching in Chakwaso began residing in one of the classrooms until construction on the convent commenced.

To promote self-employment among the poor and illiterate young women of the area, a tailoring center was established. Hundreds of young women have since benefited from this initiative.

At present there are four sisters in the community. They teach in the school, take care of the office and also the household work. There are 10 teachers, 03 non-teaching and 04 sisters. The school is up to 8th class with 275 students.
