The community at Berada is situated in an industrial area. The inhabitants of Berada include tribal groups such as the Santhals, Mundas, and Kurmis. Many of them have been displaced by government development projects and, being generally illiterate and economically disadvantaged, face numerous hardships. It was to support these vulnerable people that the Holy Cross Sisters began their mission in Berada in 1996.
At present, there are four sisters in the community. Their primary apostolate is education. The school is co-educational and offers classes from kindergarten to Grade 10. It has an enrollment of 685 students from various tribal communities, including Santhals, Mundas, Oraons, Birhors, Pahadiyas, Sabars, and Mahatos. Among them, the Birhor community lives in the forest, and the Tata Steel Foundation supports these children by providing free education and special facilities.
Approximately 137 girls reside in our hostel. Construction of the new hostel and the Plus Two building is currently in progress.
