There are currently only two sisters living in the community in the Tijuca district of Rio. Both sisters work in the Saõ Francisco hospital, which is run by Franciscan friars. The meeting with the collegial leadership was very informative about the development of the hospital.
One sister is head of the geriatric department. The other sister is in charge of the hospital’s own social store, which collects small donations for the hospital and for social causes.
Missionary work is a major concern for both sisters. One of them founded the street mission association “Missāo Esperança”. It was impressive to see the warmth with which the members of the association hand out home-cooked food and clothing to the homeless men and women.
The second sister accompanies a group of men and women who are interested in our charism. She herself supports the parish in liturgical matters and would like to play an active role in the new vocations ministry that is to be founded.
At the end of the visitation, the hospital management gave us sisters the gift of a trip to the world-famous Cristo Redentor, who spreads his arms out in blessing over the city of Rio.
