Convent Graz

The first Sisters of the Holy Cross came to Styria on 4 February 1870 – at first to Rein.

The first Provincial House in Graz was built in 1886. In 1887, the Provincial Superior moved into the first part of the new building with 14 sisters, the novices and candidates. In the following years, the church and the 2nd part of the building were added.

Today, the convent is still home to the sisters from the Styria and Carinthia regions. It is also the place for annual retreats, jubilees, funeral Masses and also the venue for regional festivities and events, which are mainly organized by the coordinator and the staff.

The sisters also carry out various tasks as far as their strengths are permitted. For example, one sister looks after the (former Provincial) Archive. Another sister works as a clinical physiotherapist in the nearby private hospital of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. One sister gives painting lessons to interested people of different age groups. Another sister works as a Sacristan in the Franciscan church. Yet another sister works closely with the Marienstüberl in Graz. And again and again, people come to the sisters to find comfort and support in their various concerns.

The community and the convent are being guided by the coordinator and a team of sisters.
