Holy Cross Sisters Community in Sitagarha

In 1974, the Holy Cross Sisters founded a community in Sitagarha, 8 kilometers away from the town of Hazaribag.

For many years, Sitagarha served as a retreat house for the Province. In accordance with the plan of all Indian Provinces to move the novitiate from the Hazaribag Training Centre to Sitagarha, the foundation stone for the novitiate building was laid on 25 January 2020. In 2022, the novitiate began in the new building for the first time.

Three junior sisters are in training to become primary school teachers at the Teacher Training Institute (TTI), which is located in the immediate vicinity of the community and is run by the Jesuits. One sister also teaches there and is additionally responsible for the boarding school. Another sister is the headmistress of the Hindi Middle School, which is also a training school for teachers training, and a second sister teaches at this school.

Three sisters are responsible for the novitiate and tertianship (for junior sisters from all Indian provinces before their perpetual vows), which lasts nine months. One sister takes care of the kitchen and the farm, and the superior must oversee the entire area.
