BHURKUNDA

Bhurkunda is a coal mining area and was inhabited by workers from outside the area. At the invitation of the Jesuits, a community of Holy Cross Sisters was founded in 1974 in Bhurkunda.

Today, four sisters and one candidate live in the community. They run a large English medium school with about 1,700 pupils up to Class 10. The sisters and teachers are very committed and the pupils achieve very good results.

The sisters look after more than 100 girls in the boarding school. In close cooperation with the Jesuits, the sisters are also involved in pastoral work in Bhurkunda and the surrounding villages.
