Twelve sisters welcomed Sister Marija Brizar

At the time of the War of Bangladesh in 1970, very many refugees were in this isolated and remote border area. Helped by volunteers, the sisters could build up a center to accommodate and care for wounded soldiers and other sick persons. Thousands of children were vaccinated. The sisters lived among the people irrespective of cast and creed.

The first school was exclusively for refugee children. The program “Food for Work” made it possible so that streets could be constructed, land cultivated, gardens laid out and the area kept clean.

From this beginning resulted a small General Hospital, a school for 2100 students and a boarding school for 320 girls. The sisters are also actively involved in the socio-pastoral service of the parish.

The photos show something of everyday life in Rajibpur.

The fishermen are of special importance. Fish and rice are the daily staple food. Cultural programs with dance performances are essential parts of every school program in India.
